South Dakota Amateur Basketball Association Hall of Fame 2008 Inductees

John Maclin               Dave Gustafson
The South Dakota Amateur Basketball Association
is delighted to welcome John Maclin to its Hall of Fame.
John grew up in the Chicago area and played his high
school ball in that hotbed of basketball talent. After
receiving All-Conference honors in high school, he
decided that his next move should be to the junior
college ranks. This took him to Anoka Ramsey in
Minnesota where he earned Junior College All-
American honors as well as the opportunity to play
basketball at the Division I level. At Montana State
University, John would claim All Big Sky Conference
honors for two years and, as a senior, would finish
third in the conference in scoring. After college, John
moved to Rapid City to explore business opportunities
in that area.
John's amateur career spanned eleven or twelve
years, the bulk of which was spent with the very
successful Rapid City Kelly's team. In 1997, Kelly's
claimed the state championship and John's dominating
play in the lane earned him the Most Valuable Player
award. Over the years, he received All-Tournament honors
several times, including 2001, when Kelly's again won
the state championship, this time in triple overtime. In
addition to his scoring talents, amateur basketball fans
remember John as a devastating offensive rebounder,
who it seemed had the ability to just keep tapping the
ball until it finally went in.
Today, John and wife Lori still make their home in
Rapid City. They are the proud parents of two daughters,
Jasmine and Alexa.
Today, we welcome Dave Gustafson to the South
Dakota Amateur Basketball Ham of Fame. Dave grew
up in the Sioux Falls area and played basketball for
Washington High School. He was All-Sioux Interstate
Conference as a junior and senior and a finalist for the
South Dakota Mr. Basketball award following his senior
season. After high school, Dave continued his basketball
career at the University of South Dakota where he was a
four-year letter winner for the Coyotes.
As best as he can remember, Dave played amateur
basketball for 16 or 17 years. During that time, his Rapid
City teams would win two state titles and were runners-up
in two others. The first championship cane in Mobridge,
where Rapid City Kelly's beat White in the final game.
During that 1997 tournament, Kelly's scored a record 153
points in one game, a record that still stands today. The
second title came in Mitchell in 2001 when Kelly's outlasted
Sioux Falls Pepsi 119-114 in triple overtime. Dave was
named to the All-Tournament Team for both championships
as well as several other less celebrated years. Amateur
fans remember "Gussy" for his end-to-end, hard-nosed
style of play which produced many highlights over the
years.
Dave still lives in Rapid City where he has been in the
general contracting business for many years. He is the
father of twelve-year-old daughters Erin and Samantha.
